Persistent post concussion symptoms & concussion management

A concussion is more than a bump to the head. When symptoms don't resolve as expected, the impact on daily life, work, and wellbeing can be profound. Our psychologists provide specialist support for every stage of concussion recovery from early intervention through to managing persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS).

Overview

What are persistent post-concussion symptoms?

Most people recover from a concussion within two to four weeks. When symptoms continue beyond four weeks, this is known as persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS), sometimes called post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Research suggests this occurs in up to 10-25% of concussion cases and can significantly affect a person's ability to work, study, socialise, and function day to day.

How we help

Our psychological approach to PPCS

There is no single cure for PPCS. An individualised, evidence based psychological approach addresses the psychological and behavioural factors that maintain symptoms and delay recovery.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT has the strongest evidence base for PPCS. It addresses unhelpful thoughts and behaviours such as avoidance and catastrophising that perpetuate symptoms, reduce activity, and prevent recovery.

Acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT)

ACT helps people build psychological flexibility learning to live fully and meaningfully even while experiencing ongoing symptoms, rather than waiting for perfect recovery before re-engaging with life.

Pacing & activity management

Education and coaching in structured pacing managing the balance between cognitive and physical activity to prevent symptom flares while gradually building tolerance and capacity.

Multidisciplinary collaboration

We work alongside GPs, neurologists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists to ensure coordinated, holistic care communicating progress and aligning treatment goals across your whole team.

Sleep & fatigue management

Targeted strategies for sleep hygiene, insomnia, and post-concussion fatigue one of the most common and disabling ongoing symptoms following mild traumatic brain injury.

Telehealth options

Accessible online sessions for clients who find travel difficult due to light sensitivity, headaches, or fatigue. Telehealth is accepted by most insurance providers and Medicare.
