Clinical philosophy

How I approach clinical work

My approach is rehabilitation informed, trauma aware, and biopsychosocial. I believe that effective psychological support for injured people cannot exist in a silo it must account for the full context of a person's injury, the systems they're navigating, and the functional and vocational goals that matter to them.

I work to avoid over pathologising distress. Being injured, being off work, dealing with a claims process, and facing uncertainty about the future are genuinely difficult circumstances. Distress in these contexts is a reasonable response not a disorder. My role is to help people develop the understanding, skills, and psychological flexibility to move through these challenges with less suffering and more effective action.

Rehabilitation informed, not just mental health focused

Psychological treatment is always aligned with functional recovery and return to work goals. I understand rehabilitation frameworks and work collaboratively with treating teams, insurers, and case managers to ensure care is coordinated and outcomes are practically meaningful.

Early intervention to prevent long-term harm

The psychological response to injury, when left unaddressed, can become as disabling as the physical injury itself. I prioritise early, targeted intervention to interrupt patterns of avoidance, distress, and functional decline before they become entrenched.

Systems aware care

Injured people don't exist in a clinical vacuum. They are navigating insurance processes, medico legal demands, family pressures, financial stress, and employment uncertainty all at once. Effective psychological support acknowledges these realities rather than ignoring them.

Clarity and practical progress over complexity

Clients and referrers both benefit from clarity about what's happening, what the treatment plan is, and what progress looks like. I write clearly, communicate promptly, and keep the focus on meaningful, measurable outcomes rather than open ended process.

Practice values

What guides our work

These aren't aspirational statements they're the practical commitments that shape how every client and referrer experiences working with Coastal Sands.

Clinical rigour without rigidity

Transparency with referrers & clients

Early action over prolonged treatment

Respect for the person, not just the presentation

Collaborative care

Dignity and respect in every interaction

"I didn't want to build a broad, generalist practice. I wanted to build a deep, specialist one where every clinical decision is informed by a genuine understanding of what injury means for a person, what the system around them demands, and what recovery actually looks like in practice."
