Sessions at Coastal Sands Counselling & Rehabilitation Services are not connected to your agency's welfare program, peer support network, or HR department, and nothing is disclosed to your employer without your explicit written consent except in the narrow circumstances required by law, such as immediate risk of serious harm.

For Queensland Police officers, there is a dedicated QPS self-referral program available. This pathway involves a deidentified process, meaning your participation is not reported back to your employer. Some officers choose to access support through this program; others prefer to attend independently on a private fee basis for complete separation from any formal process.

Accessing private psychological support through Coastal Sands Counselling & Rehab Services has no automatic connection to fitness for duty processes, security clearance reviews, or employment related assessments. Those processes are managed by your organisation not by private practitioners. Your private health information is protected. If you have specific concerns about your agency's procedures, speaking with your union or legal representative before your first appointment is worthwhile.

Yes, and this is one of the most common presentations among first responders. Cumulative trauma doesn't present like classic single event PTSD. It often shows up as emotional exhaustion, cynicism, sleep problems, irritability, relationship difficulties, or a slow erosion of things that once mattered. These presentations are treatable and well understood here, but they require sustained therapeutic engagement rather than a brief debrief. That is exactly what we provide.

PTSD is primarily a fear-based response arising from perceived threat, helplessness, or horror. Moral injury arises when actions or failures to act violated deeply held values: witnessing preventable deaths, following orders that conflicted with conscience, or feeling betrayed by an organisation during a crisis. It manifests as guilt, shame, anger, and loss of meaning rather than fear-driven hyperarousal. Effective treatment requires specifically adapted approaches that address the moral and relational dimensions of the experience not just trauma processing alone.

Yes. Telehealth is available across Queensland and nationally, accepted by Medicare and most insurers, and fully equivalent to in-person sessions for most presentations. For many first responders, telehealth is the preferred option, it is discreet, fits around shift patterns, and removes any risk of being seen walking into a clinic. Sessions are conducted via secure, encrypted video.

Absolutely. Psychological difficulties arising from emergency services roles frequently don't surface until after someone has left sometimes years later. Retirement, medical discharge, and resignation can themselves be significant psychological events involving loss of identity, purpose, and professional community. This service is available to current and former first responders at any stage, regardless of how long ago they left.

Yes. Partners and family members of first responders carry a real psychological burden often involving vicarious trauma, caregiver stress, relationship difficulties, and the particular pressures of living with someone whose work involves significant risk and emotional suppression. We provide direct support for family members, as well as relational work addressing the impact of occupational trauma on the family system.
