Coastal Sands Counselling & Rehabilitation Services
Supporting recovery, functional improvement, and sustainable participation in work and life.
Adjustment to Injury Counselling is commonly referred to as ATIC and it is a form of psychological intervention specifically designed for people who are dealing with the psychological, emotional, and behavioural consequences of a physical injury. It is distinct from general mental health counselling because it is grounded in rehabilitation principles and explicitly focused on the complex interplay between physical recovery, psychological wellbeing, and return to function.
At Coastal Sands, ATIC is delivered within statutory insurance frameworks including WorkCover Queensland and the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIISQ) as well as through private insurer funding, Medicare, and self funded arrangements. The focus is always on practical, meaningful progress: helping you understand what you're experiencing, reduce distress, and build capacity to engage with your recovery and return to work goals.
ATIC is not about telling you how to feel or rushing your recovery. It is about working collaboratively at your pace to address the psychological factors that can slow recovery when they go unaddressed.
ATIC is appropriate for adults who have experienced a physical injury and are finding that the psychological, emotional, or behavioural response to that injury is affecting their quality of life, recovery, or ability to return to work. You do not need to have a formal mental health diagnosis to benefit many people who would not describe themselves as having a mental health problem find ATIC invaluable for processing what has happened and getting their recovery back on track.
ATIC sessions at Coastal Sands are structured but flexible. No two people experience injury the same way, and treatment is always tailored to your individual presentation, injury context, and recovery goals. Across the course of treatment, sessions typically address some combination of the following areas.
"Early psychological intervention after injury significantly reduces the risk of long term psychological harm. Addressing the emotional and behavioural response to injury early before avoidance and distress become entrenched is one of the most effective things you can do to support a full and sustainable recovery."
